Erasing Mallare

Erasing Mallare. Single-channel video projection, b/w, no sound, 35 min.

ERASING MALLARE / This is one in a series of text based performances. The complete deletion of the text Mallare (Ben Hecht, 1932) is an analogue to the narrative itself, a gothic tale of madness and self destruction. The contradictory flow of the video moving forward in time in an act of erasure is meant to offer another way of experiencing the narrative by drifting backward through the words, while it forms its own kind of generative grammar in the process. For me, the deletion application is one of the exquisite native programs on the computer, acting as a dynamic interface between mathematics and language.
